We're looking to adopt a gentle (but interested in walks) house-trained family dog. We have had Labradors and Spaniels before and we have friends, relatives and neighbours with greyhounds and lurchers and are aware of the benefits - and issues of these dogs.

We live in SW Scotland in the country, on a 30 acre steading down a farm track. We have 3 cats, poultry (when the fox doesn't get them), horses and there are highland cattle and sheep (sometimes lambs) in fields around the house. We have off-road walks along tracks, through woods and fields and are close to beaches. Our garden is ill- defined as it merges with our fields but there is stock proof fencing to 1m.

We have two children, age 17 and 12. They are quite mature and gentle and sensible with dogs. However, my neighbour has 3 children ages 5, 7 and 8 who often come round and can be quite excitable - they have a working cocker who is also quite lively.

We do work full-time during the school term so we need a dog which doesn't suffer from separation anxiety. We have friends who come up daily to see their horses who can come to the house for a short while most days so most days would be broken up to some extent. We have a large farmhouse kitchen and Aga and would envisage our dog living in here (possibly using a crate sometimes) for peace, quiet and warmth.

We also spend a fair amount of time up north in the NW highlands as we have a house at the foot of the mountains on the edge of a sea-loch. Again, perfect walking country, but to enjoy it we need a dog which enjoys travelling by car.

Thanks Dalsmum!

Have you found a dog yet? Would you consider two spaniels that need to stay together?
