Where to find us...

Welcome to our re-homing page.

Whitehall Dog Rescue was set up by Brian Wheelhouse in 1992 after finding out that stray and unwanted dogs collected by dog wardens or handed in to the police had a very short time to live if they didn't find a home. The dogs were taken to private kennels who had the contracts with police and dog wardens. The dogs were put on hold for 7 days and if a new owner could not be found in this time, the dogs were put to sleep.

Brian ran a motorcycle and car sales business in Leeds and decided to try and help the plight of these poor unwanted dogs, so he converted part of his showroom and built in kennels to accommodate his new guests. A licence was sought from Leeds City council to make sure kennels came to specification. These kennels were used right up to 2004 and helped saved the lives of hundreds of dogs.

The decision was made to close the car sales business as the dog rescue was taking 99% of the time. So Brian relocated to a farm in East Ardsley in Wakefield (nr Leeds) where he continues to rescue dogs from death row.

Re-homing Policy

We welcome potential adoptees from any part of country and indeed we have re-homed abroad.

Home for all our dogs are vetted either by ourselves or friends around the country.

All our dogs are neutered whether male or female. We also fully vaccinate and micro-chip them and of course they have had deflea treatment & wormers.

We ask that all those who will be living and caring for the new dog to come and meet our dog at our premises and bring with you any dogs that you already own. We have a 4 acre field where we can introduce your dog and our dog to see if everyone gets along.

If all goes well and everyone seems happy with each other (both dogs and humans) then we will schedule a home visit.

Please phone for details of our adoption fees and any other queries that you may have.

Please see the listings below for all our dogs currently at the shelter looking for homes.

Please could you phone us rather than post a reply on this forum, as all our time is taken with caring for the dogs and we don't have time to check this forum on a daily basis.

Thank-you for caring!

Hi my name is Hector Where are those kind hearted people that used to ring our rescue and ask to take on the dog has been with us the longest. Poor Hector has sat at the rescue since he was about a year old and other dogs have come and gone, but Hector still waits for that forever home. Hector was born approximately June 2008 he is a Bull Terrier cross. Hector came to us from death row at the dog compound. Sadly Hector has severe scars on his head and it is possible that Hector has been abused or used as a bait dog. Despite this Hector is the most loving fun dog you could hope for.
He is a firm favorite amongst the volunteers and he has a love for everyone.
He loves being in a home and is the perfect house guest. He love to play especially with squeaky
toys, but his favorite thing is curling up with you for cuddles.
Hector would prefer to be the only dog in the household although he goes out for his exercise with lots of other dogs and walks past other dog’s fine when out on his lead walks. Hector is a fun, loyal companion with a soft heart. Can you help Hector forget his past? please call Brian on 07831421715

Hi my name is Kia. Kia is an Akita Cross approximatley a third smaller than an Akita. Kia was born approximately January 2008. She came into the rescue after her owner was taken into care and his family were going to destroy her. She’s a medium size dog with lots of character. She’s ok with most dogs if properly introduced. Kia would benefit from a home with larger dogs or no dogs at all and preferably with knowledge of the Akita type dog. If you can give Kia a forever home please call Brian on 07831-421715

Hi my name is Grace. Grace was born approximately January 2012 Grace is a very friendly dog both with people and other dogs. Grace loves nothing more than playing with all the other dogs at the Rescue whether they are small or large. She is a medium sized dog but with shorter legs not that it slows her down at all as she can keep up with Sam our resident Border Collie. If you are interested in giving Grace a forever home please contact Brian on 07831-421715

Hi my name is Basil. This is young Basil. He is a small terrier cross that was born approx November 2012. He has a lovely temperament despite the fact he was removed from a home after the owner was cruelly treating him, resulting in injuries to his rear leg. Basil is fully recovered now and his confidence is fully restored. He loves other dogs and this helps give him more confidence hence we would like Basil to go to a home with another dog/s. He now loves people young or old and we would love to find that perfect forever home for Basil if you would like to meet Basil please call Brian on 07831-421715

Hi my name is Gus. This is Gus. He is a Staffordshire bull terrier that was born approx 2004. Gus was found wandering the streets by a man out walking his dog who sadly had to hand Gus into the dog compound hoping Gus's owner would come forward, but they didn't so Gus was to be destroyed. Fortunately we had a space and took Gus in on the day he was to be put to sleep. Gus has a superb temperament but doesn't like to be left alone for too long probably as a result of being left on the streets by someone. Gus gets on with most dogs but can sometimes lose his manners and get a bit frisky if you can give Gus a forever home please call Brian on 07831-421715

Hi my name is Rosie. This is Rosie. She is a black German Shepherd that was born approx 2007. Rosie loves other dogs and people she knows but is typical of the breed where she can be very guarding of the home and will try bite visitors although she has a superb temperament with her guardians. Rosie managed to nip a visitor at the home she grew up in and sadly she was going to be put to sleep because of this. We believe that the right home is out there that can make sure Rosie doesn't find herself in the same situation, Rosie is perfectly happy wearing a muzzle so she can't get herself in to trouble. It goes without saying it must be a home that is child free. Despite the above Rosie is a very loving dog and is very very good with other dogs. If you can give Rosie a forever home please call Brian on 07831-421715

Hi my name is Dillon. This is Dillon. He is a greyhound cross collie that is about collie size. He was born approx early 2012 and was sadly due to be destroyed at the dog compound as the kennel staff couldn't get near him. It turned out Dillon was just scared to death and his confidence is growing by the day. Dillon although slightly nervous at first is good both with humans and Dogs. If you think you can offer Dillon a forever home please give Brian a call on 07831-421715

Hi my name is Bruce. This is Bruce. He is a Sharpei cross that was born approx mid 2012. He was brought into us by the Dog Wardens after he had being hit by a car resulting in Bruce's front leg being broken. He is now fully recovered and running around our field at a great pace! Bruce is a lively dog and loves lots of attention. Bruce gets on well with other dogs that get on well with him but will be a little bit bossy with dogs that give him a hard time. Bruce will need to go to a home with either no children or teenagers upwards because of how lively he is and can't help himself jumping up. If you can give Bruce a forever home please call Brian on 07831-421715

Hi our names are Buddy & Holly. This is the legendary Buddy and Holly . . . They were born approximately 2007 and have always lived together hence we require a forever home that can keep the duo together. They were left with a lady when her son went into the army and then the lady handed them into the dog compound and sadly they couldn't be found a home within the 7 days holding time so were going to be destroyed. They are both very well behaved dogs and love each other to pieces but are not brilliant with other dogs on first meeting. If you can give Buddy & Holly a forever home please call Brian on 07831-421715
