Whitehall Dog Rescue was set up by Brian Wheelhouse in 1992 after finding out that stray and unwanted dogs collected by dog wardens or handed in to the police had a very short time to live if they didn't find a home. The dogs were taken to private kennels who had the contracts with police and dog wardens. The dogs were put on hold for 7 days and if a new owner could not be found in this time, the dogs were put to sleep.

Brian ran a motorcycle and car sales business in Leeds and decided to try and help the plight of these poor unwanted dogs, so he converted part of his showroom and built in kennels to accommodate his new guests. A licence was sought from Leeds City council to make sure kennels came to specification. These kennels were used right up to 2004 and helped saved the lives of hundreds of dogs.

The decision was made to close the car sales business as the dog rescue was taking 99% of the time. So Brian relocated to a farm in East Ardsley in Wakefield (nr Leeds) where he continues to rescue dogs from death row.

Re-homing Policy

We welcome potential adoptees from any part of country and indeed we have re-homed abroad.

Home for all our dogs are vetted either by ourselves or friends around the country.

All our dogs are neutered whether male or female. We also fully vaccinate and micro-chip them and of course they have had deflea treatment & wormers.

We ask that all those who will be living and caring for the new dog to come and meet our dog at our premises and bring with you any dogs that you already own. We have a 4 acre field where we can introduce your dog and our dog to see if everyone gets along.

If all goes well and everyone seems happy with each other (both dogs and humans) then we will schedule a home visit.

Hi! My name is Will !!

Will is a male Lurcher type dog that is approx 4yrs old & he is medium sized.

Will was abandoned by is former owner & was due to be destroyed at the holding kennels.

He was a very sad & confused Dog when he first came in, but now he has fully regained his confidence.

He loves people of all ages to the point that he would stand & receive attention as long as you are willing to stand there & give him attention (I bet you'll get bored before he does!!)

He loves to play with other dog's, (most find it difficult to keep up with him as he is very very fast!).

Will is not suitable around Cat's or Rabbit's etc. (He can jump tall fences to get to them) So Will needs a home where this wouldn't be a problem.

Hi! My Name Is Clyde!!

Clyde is a Male Staffordshire Bull Terrier that is approx 3 years old.

He is a very Friendly Dog & just loves nothing more than having lots of fuss & attention.

He is a very Happy dog despite ending up in the Dog Compound on Death Row.

Clyde looks after his Kennel & never chews his bed or messes in his Kennel & is a very easy Dog to look after.

Hi my name is Cassidy.


I am a 2year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I was rescued from death row at the dog compound.
I have been at Whitehall since Christmas now and am ready for a home of my own now.
I was very shy and nervous when I first came to the rescue but have since gained much more confidence.
I walk nicely on my lead and am very friendly. I love cuddles and tummy tickles.
I haven't been socialised with other dogs before the rescue but am making excellent progress now and go out with lots of dogs.
I still need a bit of work with other dogs but I'm much much better than I was.
I am very loyal will make someone a loving companion.

This cheeky chappie is the handsome Hector.
Hector is approximately 3 years old Staffordshire Bull Terrier/ Bull Dog cross.
Hector came to us from death row at the dog compound.
Sadly Hector has severe scars on his head and it is possible that Hector has been abused or used
as a bait dog.
Despite this Hector is the most loving fun dog you could hope for.
He is a firm favourite amongst the volunteers and he has a love for everyone.
He loves being in a home and is the perfect house guest. He love to play especially with squeaky
toys, but his favourite thing is curling up with you for cuddles.
Hector would prefer to be the only dog although he may be ok with a steady female and walks past other dog’s fine when out on his walks.
Hector is a fun, loyal companion with a soft heart. If only there was a hector for everyone!

Hi My Name Is Barney!

This fine specimen is Barney! we can only describe him as a
sawn off Greyhound or a proper hybrid! (He is about the height of a King Charles Spaniel).

Barney is approx 3 years old and sadly was due to be destroyed at the Dog Compound
after his owner had handed him in when they no longer wanted him.

Barney is brilliant with people of all ages and very good with Dog's once he knows them
but can be a bit bossy with the ones he doesn't know. Barney is not suitable with Cat's.

He would make a loving companion to any household and deserves to go to a forever home

Hi My Name Is Zak!

This is Zak he is a male Rottweiler that was brought to us by the Police
after he was found roaming the streets. We contacted the Dog Wardens and they took details
but sadly his owner never turned up so we can only assume he was abandoned by his owner.

Zak is approx 3 years old and is a very lively Dog so lots of exercise is required.

Zak is not good with other Dog's at the moment but we have had him neutered and are
hoping in time this will help us socialise him with other Dog's.

Zak is very loyal to the person who is caring for him and would be best suited to an
experienced owner without any children.

He has an awful lot of Love to give to the right owner if you think this is you and you can

Hi my name is Benji. I am a 2 year old cross breed. I had a very disruptive life before I came to Whitehall and was a very confused little dog. I didn't have much in my previous home and Brian came to rescue me before I was destroyed. I've never looked back since I came to the rescue. I get on well with al other dogs and love my kennel pals Max and Shelly. My recall is good and I am clean in my kennel. I'm still quite shy at the moment but I'm coming on more and more each day. I'm looking for a stable family home now where I will get lots of walks and attention. Do you have space for me in your house?

This is Tojo aka "smiler". Tojo's owners sadly went into care and he was sent to the Dog pound whilst a decision was made for Tojo's future was made. Tojo was due to be destroyed until one of the social workers involved in the care of Tojo's owners contacted Whitehall Dog Rescue and asked if we could help. Despite the upset Tojo still arrived to us with a smile on his face and is clockwork tail doing overtime! He really is one of the happiest Dogs you could wish to meet and loves all people young or old. Tojo gained his name because when he was a puppy his mum must have being stressed out and chewed Tojo's back toes off (TOe JOb) this makes him run on 3 legs but doesnt worry him in the least. He is approx 9 years old and would be better suited to a home without other pets.

JACK
Jack came into the rescue after his owner sadly died. He’s a white and tan Jack Russell who’s approximately 3 years old. He’s a real character. He’s good with other dogs and walks superb on his lead. Jack would be suitable to live with children age 7 and above. He loves treats, long walks and having a fuss. His recall still needs a little work but were certain this will come when he’s settled.

KIA
Kia is a Akita Cross/German Shepherd cross who’s approximately 5 years old. She came into rescue after her owner was taken into care and his family were going to destroy her. She’s a medium size dog with lots of character and shows typical German Shepherd Traits. She’s ok with most dogs if properly introduced and walks quite well on the lead. Kia would benefit from a home with older children and preferably with knowledge of the Akita or German Shepherd Breed.

STORM
Storm is a very special boy. He is a rare breed Blue Thailand Ridgeback who is 3 years old. Storm has had 2 homes already in his short life, but through no fault of his own has found himself in rescue. He was badly beaten as a puppy and then rescued from harm by his last owner. Sadly she then became ill and was unable to care for Storm. Storm was not walked for nearly two years. Storm is coming on leaps and bounds now. He's good with other dogs and loves children. Storm would benefit from a steady home with a family who will spend time with him to rebuild his condidence.
