I'd like to get Ellie to stand on a small block with both front paws, just a little trick to learn.

She will touch the side of the block with her paw but I'm having trouble knowing how to shape the trick. Ideally to touch the front of the block, then one paw on then both.

Are you using a clicker?

I find that is the best way to shape behaviour.

I am but we cant get past her just touching the block and I don't know how to progress

I would use a lure and then C&T. I dont have the patience to wait for a dog to work it our for himself. ninja.gif

As above - if I get really stuck with Kiki, I do one or two lures, then continue with shaping. Casper generally doesn't get shaping very easily so is mostly taught with luring.

Another option would be to go "back" a step and teach paw targetting - then you could target her paws onto the top of the block? unsure.gif

I recently taught my three to stand with front paws on a box. I tried shaping the behaviour but could only get them to touch the block with one paw. So I lured them onto the block a few times and that worked for us. We're just working on extending the duration so they'll stay with front paws on the block until I release them

ok, thanks, luring it is in tongue.gif I'll certainly get her on the block with some sausage. Out of interest, when you add a verbal cue, what's your word for this trick?

Mine is 'Feet up' and I mostly use it cos it makes nice photo poses. lol.gif

nice photo Coinsky and feet up is a good word. I was using up yesterday but I will start again with feet up, that sounds much better.

Ok, well yesterday I lured her a couple of times and bingo she got it within a minute or so smile.gif She's such a clever pup wub.gif

Aww she is doing really well! wub.gif Clever girl!

I only use 'Feet up' rather than up because I say 'hup' to mean jump over something so I think the 2 words sound too similar.
