Dog Pages Funding

To keep DP running we need to raise money on a regular basis. Please do your best to support our fund raising activities or to come up with any other ideas to support this forum . Anyone having any ideas on fundraising can post them here first to share thoughts with others. We will be seeking volunteers to undertake various activities. If you can help or donate anything please let us know.

Don't know if this would work, but...

I was thinking about trying to organise some sort of support group for owners of 'reactive' dogs in and around my area of North London.

We have a rescue mini lurcher who's reactive with dogs and generally a bit nervous outside/in new/busy places, so it's difficult to find walkers/sitters/boarding for him as he needs to be the only dog.

I'm a first time owner and really appreciate the advice and support offered on dogpages and thought it would be nice to have something similar on a face-to-face basis with a group of local(ish) dog owners.

But I was also thinking it would be nice to have a group where people could 'swap' walking/sitting help.

For example, perhaps there could be some sort of buddy scheme whereby 2 (or more?) owners in an area get to know each other and each other's dogs and help each other out with dogsitting or walking on an occasional basis. Then, if finances allow, the owner whose dog is being walked/sat could make a donation to dogpages as 'payment' for the service?

I'd actually really like to help someone else out as I know how hard it is to find good people who are willing to take time to learn how to handle a reactive dog (mind you I'm still learning myself!) and I'd also welcome the learning experience of getting to know another reactive dog - plus I love dogs and would just love the chance to spend more time with more of them!

I have a partner who works from home, as I do, and we're lucky enough to not have to work so much so we do have more time than most to do this. I understand it might not be so easy for others.

Is anyone else out there interested in something like this? Do you think it would work, on its own and/or as a fundraiser?

What an absoultely beautiful dog!

I think your idea is brilliant - but I wondered if it could be taken a step further and just include any kind of local support for other dog owners. We used to attend puppy parties at our local vets (we're in the South West) and found these fantastic - we got to meet other dog owners, other dogs, had a cuppa and a chat whilst the dogs played. It was chaotic and there was the odd skirmish but on the whole it helped us first time dog owners out no end. We got free health and training advice too. Sadly our dog got too old to go any more so we lost that help and support. I often wonder why there isn't something similar for older dogs - not for training purposes but purely to meet new people and swap ideas and let the dogs continue to socialise. Obviously it wouldn't be for all dog owners or even all dogs - some dogs just hate to mix. But those people that did attend could make a small donation. Finding a premises could be an issue but maybe a local vet would be willing to help? Or perhaps an animal charity with somewhere to meet - split the donated cash with them? Have had an idea, not mine originally but I know of a Donkey Charity who every Christmas put a candle on a tree in memory of a loved one/animal who has gone to the bridge for a donation. Dont know if it could be done on here but what about something like that, that could run all year and be added to in the form of something like trees, butterflies or a sort of rememberance garden or something more original and ie each butterfly, flower or whatever could be named and used like a rememberance plaque for a donation? Hope what Im saying makes a bit of sense but in case it doesn't shall keep my cap on.
